Funky Austin

Most of Austin is somewhat funky--they pride themselves on it-- but one little neighborhood includes some real jewels of funkiness. This week Laura, Jim and I made a little visit (after delivering books to the half-price book store which is an adventure in itself). Most of the stores here sell seventies stuff. How else do you classify it? Some of it is downright ugly. Case in point, the multicolored shag rug on the floor. Some of it isn't too bad but the overload can be a bad trip if you know what I mean.
We squeezed in a lunch at an Austin institution (at least in my book), Threadgill's. Southern down home cooking, and it is GOOD! The North Lamar locale is the original place and is built around an old dining car. Janis Joplin entertained here in the 60's. Photos of her and many other famous people adorn the walls. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable day!
