Biking is a little more hazardous than I expected. Maybe I should have taken the helmet, even if it did give me head lice (as one of the reviewers stated). This morning we rode to the southeastern tip of the island to see the historic lighthouse and its beach. The biking path kept getting narrower and narrower and the bike traffic kept getting busier and busier. One real hazard is crossing streets and driveways into businesses. Most people keep their eyes open and are very courteous to bikers, but still there can be some unexpected near-encounters. We managed to get to our destination unscathed, walked the beach a ways, and then stopped for an excellent deli lunch eaten on a bench on the porch on the way back. It hit the mid 80's today so we worked up a sweat!
Periwinkle Park is absolutely beautiful. Most of the park has permanent trailers (old, vintage even) or manufactured homes. Trailer sites are spacious and shady. Management is very particular: No dogs, no renting out of units, drive 7 1/2 miles per hour in the park, no clotheslines, etc. This park has been grandfathered in because trailer parks are not allowed on the island, nor are high rises. One interesting feature of the park is the bird aviary in front of one of the ponds. I don't know the story on that yet, but tomorrow we will be going to the bird show at 10 A.M. and maybe we will learn then. I made a little tour around the grounds today.
We made two housekeeping trips today on the bikes, first to the ATM up the road for cash (and stops at the local shell shops on the way) and then an additional trip for me to the local market to pick up coffee. Horrors, what would we do without coffee in the morning? I did manage to pick up my much-anticipated sunset photo from the parking lot of the store. . .
