The USS Midway, one big hummer

San Diego is a navy town. Large cranes dot the waterfront landscape; sailors stroll the streets; gray ships line the bays. The star of the show is the USS Midway, an aircraft carrier that was commissioned in 1945 and served notably to evacuate Saigon in 1975. It was decommissioned in 1992 and became a museum in 2004. We toured the ship on Wednesday. Our favorite part was listening to the docents, old veterans who had served on the ship in its heyday, explain the take-off and landing process on that small patch of landing strip in the ocean.

Six sailors lived in this space. The ship held 3-4000 people at a time. Tight quarters!
