Let's be clear about this: Papas and Gracie live for Sarah but will accept us as reasonable substitutes if we offer plentiful bribes and follow them well on their leashes. Sarah bought them a fluffy, velvety bed which she knew they would never use since they only want to be curled up on the couch next to us or crowding our feet whenever we are other places in the apartment. I kept insisting that they would really love that bed in the bathroom where they are confined when we have to leave them. No, Sarah would say, they will see it as a giant toy to be chewed to pieces. Our roles seem to be reversed these days because in spite of being strongly cautioned, I pursued my own ideas and left the little rascals with a soft comfy bed--taking the precaution of covering it with the sheet they have been trying to tear apart just in case--and arrived home to find lots of fluffy blue stuffing decorating our bathroom. Oh dear, now I have to tell Sarah that she was right! Oh, that hurts.
