Going to the Dogs Again. . .and the Horses and the Chickens

Laura and Ken and the boys arrived from Texas on the day after Christmas. Their friends Catherine and Peter (and son Sawyer) had generously offered us the use of their beautiful Corrales home with guest house for our stay while they were away vacationing in California. The "catch" was that we are to take care of their animals. Catherine's mother Joan had been in charge and had the misfortune of having to take one of the (four) dogs to the vet on Christmas Eve and having to put the dog down on Christmas Day. She welcomed us with open arms. Now we need to make sure that the rest of the animals make it to the end of the year when their owners return.
Catherine's house is a traditional adobe home that has been extensively remodeled and updated. It includes a swimming pool, a hot tub, playhouse (upper floor of the chicken house), trampoline, and two fireplaces. Water bubbles in a fountain when you enter the enclosed patio leading from the driveway to the front sitting room. One of the rooms in the guest house is a massage studio for Catherine and it has a self-massage table, but I haven't been able to figure out how to work it. . yet.
Our chores include feeding and watering the dogs and horses. The chickens have a self-watering and feeding system so we just have to gather the eggs and let them out in the afternoon and shut them up at night after they come in to roost. Catherine started out with 16 chickens and is now down to 8. Coyotes have considered the place a fast food spot. We hope to keep the status quo.
Two dogs are gentle giants and the third dog is a little terrier mix. Catherine is a rescue dog person so these dogs have come from abusive situations. For instance, Beau, the St. Bernard, was left tied to a tree for four days without food or water when his owners left town. Now these dogs have the run of the house and they are sweet, gentle animals. They go in and out through (looks to me) a tiny dog door in the laundry room. I haven't seen how they manage it yet, but they do. The other large dog is Canab and the terrier is Chester. Chet likes to sleep under the covers with whoever is sleeping in the master bedroom. That would be Laura and Ken.
The horses are Easy and Sipi. Notice they wear coats because it has been cold here. We feed them hay morning and night and keep their water tank filled. They are ridable but I will pass on that. We haven't been told if we are to clean up the . . .umm. . .leavings. That could be a good job for the children.
